Vintage TEAC CX-210 Stereo Cassette Tape Deck Service & Tested

Description

Offered is a vintage Teac CX-210 stereo cassette deck generally in very good or better cosmetic and in proper working condition.   As received it was not operational due to the fact that the main capstan belt had turned to goo (as many of these do).  After cleaning the belt residue three new belts were installed, capstan, FF/Rew and counter belts.  The record/playback head and pinch roller exhibited typical signs of wear.   Currently both the playback and record functions work well but there is wear to the head and so drop off at the highest frequencies (especially above 8kHz) is observed.  This wear is typical in many cassette decks from this era.  Another issue was that one of the VU meters was not working.  This problem was traced to a failed diode in the VU control circuit.  In addition a small number of transistors known to age badly were replaced with modern equivalents. There is no volume control for the headphone output.  Mechanically the deck is in very good working order.  The keys employ a direct mechanical linkage; for the longest life use only the minimum force needed to engage the chosen setting.
Cosmetically the deck is generally in very good shape with just a few minor defects in the finish.  The front face is in excellent shape.

1. Three belts replaced
2. Solder joints inspected and remelted in many places
3. Problematic board level components replaced (parts sourced from either Mouser or Arrow electronics)
4. All exterior surfaces cleaned
5. Motor speed adjusted
6. Azimuth aligned
7. Bias, record levels and playback levels reset.
8. Tape path and pinch roller cleaned
9. Capstan bearings and reel tables lubricated with synthetic bearing oil
10. RECORD pots treated with DeOxIT
11. Record and playback tested
12. Dolby tested
