What Weight is Best?
U-channel posts are typically available in two different weights. The heavy duty, 2 lbs post is a standard at municipalities. It is ideal for traffic signs and signs 18 x 24 and larger.
The medium weight, 1.12 lbs post, is lower cost and popular for 12 x 18 signs.
The weight of the post is determined per foot of length. A 2 lbs, 6 long post should weigh approximately 12 pounds.
What Height is Best?
8 posts
are most popular. 8 posts are the standard for most parking lots, schools and malls.
6 posts
, however are easier to install and are are favored by home owners or for off-street installations. Assuming 1.5 below-ground depth, this gives a height of 3 between the ground and the bottom of a typical 18 tall sign.
The hole spacing and hole size is standard across all post heights.
6 posts are often used in pairs, with one nested into the other. This makes it easier to install a post.
Combine two 6' posts to give you a 7 clearance to the bottom of 2' tall sign. This is the distance between the ground and the bottom of a sign.
A 4 and a 6 post can be combined to give you a total above ground post height of 7.
An 8 post will give you about 5 between the ground and the bottom of a parking sign.
How to Install a Post
To achieve a sign height that can be seen over a parked SUV, we recommend using two overlapping 6 posts. This also avoids the 'head knocker' hazard that can occur when a distracted pedestrian absentmindedly confronts shorter post and sign installation.
Try Two Posts Instead!
Professionals often use two overlapping 6 2 lbs posts. This gives the signs plenty of headroom (thereby avoiding needless pedestrian accidents). Installing two sign, surprisingly, can be quite easy. See the next photo. Generally, we recommend from 6 to 12 of overlap between the two posts. It is not possible to overlap two medium weight 1.12 lbs posts.
Attach the sign to the flange side of the 2nd post and lay this post on the ground near to buried post. Align the posts so that they will nest. Thread one bolt through both posts. Then swing up the second post to vertical and, on the top of the overlap, tighten the second bolt.
Pounding in the Post
Posts are generally pounded into the ground (unless a sand-filled sleeve is used). For all but the shortest posts, we recommend using the bed of a pickup truck as your platform.
Although post drive caps are used by professionals installing posts every day, most users find this unnecessary.
Avoid the Ladder
Trying to use a sledge hammer while perched on a ladder is an invitation for an accident. Use the stability of a pickup truck bed. Or start with a shorter post that can be driven more easily into the ground.
