    Description

This is GM-produced poster features Rock Island Rockets, a 3 or 4 passenger car set. Bern Hill was a freehand artist famous for his marketing work for Electro-Motive Division in the 1950/s. This was part of a series of posters for the GM's EMD featuring their customer's trains.
The Rock Island Railroad connected Chicago and the corn belt states with Denver and Texas and had an extensive midwest trackage. By 1856 Rock Island reached the Mississippi River connecting Chicago during an era of growth for many railroads. Following the Civil War, it grew further to connect the ag markets of Omaha to the South to Texas becoming a national rail line. The Rock Island offered extensive passenger services in competition with the Burlington Route and Santa Fe. In the post-war era, an elongated and failed merger with the wealthier Union Pacific (UP) was never approved by the Interstate Commerce Commission and this finally led to its bankruptcy. In 1980, it was unceremoniously liquidated of its assets, and much of the trackage ending up with the UP. While many railroads merged in the post-war era, few disappeared as sadly and unfashionably as did "The Rock".
