Update: Price increase is only temporary (because shipping possibilities are very unstable thesedays)
Here I sell one
speed calibration tape - 3000 Hz
sinus signal recorded
PLEASE, read description and FAQ section before you send me the message or question.
I get tens of messages every day and now it is not manageable for me to answer them all.
However, if you have any question related to your, order, quality, shipping, feel free to ask.
After several years, most electronic components change their characteristics/values. The result is, that some parameters go out of specs. I can mention for example output level, balance, or motor speed. Change of the output level is audible when using tapes recorded/played with dolby on. However, change of motor speed is much more audible. Therefore, every 10-20 years, or with each belt replacement, the speed should be adjusted.
Here is how to do it easily:
1. Buy this speed calibration tape. For recording, I use recently serviced, quartz controlled cassette deck - flagship of Sony: TC-K555ESJ.
2. Use your sound card as input device and connect it to your walkman or cassette deck. Modern sound cards do not have input (only output). In this case, buy cheap USB audio converter.
For example, ebay search for "ezcap 3.5mm to usb audio converter". There are many, for good price. I think you will find it useful for digitizing your tape recordings, as well.
3. Download frequency reader software, for example WfGui
4. Find speed adjustment screw (potentiometer). Mostly, you have to have cover removed to get access to it. It is easy to find. Usually it is located next to the motor electronics or on the motor itself. Do not touch audio output level calibration pots. They're usually marked as 'L' or 'R'.
5. Connect your walkman or cassette deck to the sound card, connect sound card to the PC and run above mentioned software.
6. Play the speed calibration tape and adjust the speed using small screwdriver. The frequency reader should show frequency close to 3000Hz. You will not be able to set it exactly to 3000 because of high wow/flutter of most walkmans. But 3000 plus minus 30 should be OK.
OR EASIER WAY:
- download application "Frequency counter" from app store
- connect walkman to external audio system (or put headphone close to smartphone microphone)
- adjust speed until you see frequency close to 3000Hz in Android application
For IOS, there should be similar application
The image is for illustration only. I will record on any cassette that I have at hand, usually on cheaper Normal tape of various brands and lengths.
The reason, why I sell this tape is, that I want to encourage people in keeping and enjoying their old walkmans or cassette decks. That's why I SELL without profit, for the lowest-possible price. The sell price includes all eBay and PayPal fees, packing material and the tape itself.
Every day I get several tens of messages from buyers. I am very happy to help but I cannot manage to answer them all. I need several hours a day to answer them, which is not possible. If you have any questions related to walkman repairs, please visit tapeheads.net or stereo2go.com sites and ask experienced members, there. Answers are then available for everyone. I also contribute there. If you need belt which is not listed in my rich store, then it's because I don't know what is correct size for your specific player. Please, check there, first. If it is not listed there, measure the belt circumference by stretching a piece of string along the belt path. From this, I can calculate the original belt size. If you have any question related to orders, like shipment status, feel free to ask. Worldwide registered shipping for the lowest possible price. The shipping from Slovakia is generally very fast, package leaves country in 1-2 business days after it has been posted. The delivery time depends mostly on the delays in the destination country. Typically - from 2 days to 2 weeks, rarely it is more. If the taps is not delivered in 30 days, let me know and I will send you new one.
FAQ section
Q: Do you also sell azimuth, level and other calibration tapes?
A: No, I do not have correct fulltrack recorder to prepare them
Q: I can hear lot of wow/flutter
A: There can be many reasons for it. Most often it is worn pinch roller, dirt in the belt path, dirty or dry moving parts of
player
, polis
